So we tried a math problem that went like this:
The Very Hungry Caterpillar ate 16 pieces of Swiss cheese. Then he ate 14 pieces of Cheddar cheese. How many pieces of cheese did he eat in all?
These pictures are of us solving this simple addition problem. They all got it. A couple of friends needed a little help from a peer. This was because they were not counting carefully and have a bit of work left to do with one to one correspondence (touching each object as they say the number)
