We just started learning about 2 dimensional shapes. Today we did a triangle/not a triangle sort. It's fun to have the discussion and hear them explain exactly how they know if it's a triangle (3 sides, 3 corners, straight lines, etc).
Below you'll see some pictures of our free exploration of shapes. It's a great way for them to practice making shapes of different sizes, examine the sides/corners, etc.
Some friends naturally experimented with using shapes to make a different shape!
I really want my kids to explore and think about shapes in ways they never have before. So we spend time manipulating concrete models, and then we talk about them--a lot!
I'm not overly concerned that kids memorize facts about shapes and then regurgitate them on command. I have found that this happens naturally as we explore shapes through hands-on learning and problem-solving.
