Happy Monday!

AWWWW! What a special way to start my Monday :) :)

Today Will showed us what he did as a reader....he was reading a Froggy book and came to this sentence pictured below: "Her name is Pollywogilina!" said Mom.
Will told the class that he was stuck on the word 'Pollywogilina' and he tried to leave it blank and figure out what would make sense, but it didn't work. So the class suggested that he try breaking the word into chunks and saying the sounds slowly. We did it and it worked!!!!

Saying goodbye to Miss Vermeulen! SAD :( You will be missed!!!!!!

A GREAT Wednesday!!!

Had to post this great picture of Jace! He finally wore his 100 day shirt :) He was a bit too shy to wear it on the 100th day. We were very proud of him!

Eve came up with a brilliant idea! She decided to call our 'towers' 'ten towers'....because every time we count them, there are always 10 cubes! Very smart! It's hard to explain, but many children struggle with the concept of 5 and 10. They still count from 1 every time. You can't force your child to count on. It comes from much practice with counting and playing counting games. You can ask, "How many are there?"...then tell them, "5 is always 5 and 10 is always 10!" Eventually, it will come.

We played this great math game today called snap it! Students hid 5 or 10 cubes behind their back. Then they snapped off some and showed it to their partner. So you might show 3 and say, "how many am I hiding?" This is the game we'll play for math packs this weekend!

Happy Tuesday!

We had such a fun day today :) :) Here we are playing a math game together. It's called Double Compare. This game is played kind of like war. You can play it at home! Players draw two cards and whoever has the larger sum wins that pile of cards.

It was Cyan's real birthday today! Doesn't she look beautiful? We had some yummy cupcakes to help us celebrate today too!

Happy Monday!

We continue to learn about Spring! We drew some pictures to show our schema about this new and wonderful season.

Owen talked about how trees will start to bud soon. Yay!

Dawson and Will both wrote about rainstorms!

Bryanna said that the flowers are growing, the bugs are coming back and that baby animals are being born :) Aww.

Noah had a special idea about Spring......his birthday! Cute :)

Today we read, Little Red Hen--one of my favorite big books! We wanted to work on comprehension, so we did some work with the characters in the story. Reagan pretended to be Little Red Hen and we were news reporters. We interviewed her and the kids asked amazing questions that referred back to the story!

Handwriting :) :)

Happy FRIDAY!!!!!!

Here we are working on our 10 chains. We had talked yesterday about how we might organize the 10 chains so that they are easy to count! Jenna's 10 chain is counted by 2's. We saw chains that could be counted by 1's, 2,'s, 5's and 10's!

Happy Thursday!

Will is sharing his story he wrote.....and the story that he added more to because the kids suggested that he add some details! What a hard worker!

Eve shared a terrific story with us that she had written about baseball!!! Her family must be athletic...but I found it really cute when Eve asked me, "What is that ball called that is white with red strips?"

Here is a picture of Miss Vermeulen leading us in an ordering math warm-up on the smartboard!

Today Jenna shared a FaNtAsTiC story with us about her little sister's upcoming birthday. It's so cute, in fact, that she is planning on taking it home to give to her as a present :) :) Awwww!

Dawn was back to teach us more about business and money!

Sorry to be behind on pictures....

Miss Vermeulen has been working with students on inferring! Here are our thinking stems that good readers use while reading!

She read us this wonderful book and had us practice making inferences :)

We finished up our how to writing with a big 'how to make a snowman' project! They're SO cute!!!

I hope you had a wonderful 6th birthday Owen!!!! Thank you for donating such an AWESOME book :) Pete the Cat rocks!

Oh, and your little sister is absolutely adorable :) :)

CUTE!

Yesterday we had a refresher on our number words. We really should know these and be able to read them by the end of the year.

We worked a lot with our 10 bead bracelets yesterday. We worked on making combinations of 5. Then we wrote addition and subtraction sentences to match....many of our students are fluently adding to 5, but not fluently subtracting with those same numbers.

Dawson had a brilliant answer for our math problem yesterday! The problem was a subtraction problem and he even figured out the subtraction sentence.

We worked on vowels yesterday. We listened to a song called Pepperoni Pizza...and held up the vowels as we listened :)
