Okay everyone...how did Jaxon sort? Leave us some comments!

Hermit Crab Fun!

Today we got Sully out from hiding in his tank :) He's pretty friendly, but still kind of shy.
The kids worked on a building for him and then we tried making a tiny cave! Can you tell that he really liked it???

Independence :)

Three BIG cheers for Ryken! Each day Ryken has been asking Miss Dunker or other friends to help him tie his shoes. Well.....we all know that Ryken can do it, but that it's still a little hard.

Let me tell you--yesterday he was a shoe tying machine! Hahaha. Great job Ryken. Isn't he proud???

We practice independence in K. We do work on shoe tying, but the lesson is to practice....work hard to play hard K02! :)

Friday, September 21st!

GOODBYE SUMMER! Are you going to miss summer or are you ready for fall?
We made Eric Carle suns today and danced around the room to a song that was all about soaking up the sun!!!!

We've been talking so much about counting carefully. At our math stations next week, we'll add in a game called 'Grab & Count.' The kids count and double check their counting to make sure they counted carefully. I saw a LOT of double checking today!

We will also show a number of objects with playdough!

Bryson counting........

and Bryson double checking!

Kurgan added his own spin as a mathematician! Can you tell what he did?

Ryken wasn't sure how to write an 11.....but he had a strategy-and it wasn't ask Miss Dunker!
He looked at the calendar and started counting from 1.

Our last recess of summer :(

Oh well! HAPPY FALL TO ALL OF YOU! :)

More Sorting!

Thank you to Gabi and family for sending in a beautiful picture of our smart friend sorting some coins!

Friends at home----What attribute did Gabi use to sort the coins?

Thanks to Aryn and Family!

Thank you for sending in pictures how you are learning at home :) The learning never ends!

Aryn was sorting a favorite snack! What attribute did she sort by kids? Leave us a comment and tell us your guess!

Wednesday, Sept 19th

Today we did another team building math problem. We worked in groups of 3. Each group had the same problem:
There are 4 people at a party. How can you sort these cookies so that each person gets 3 cookies?
Look at this group above. First they tried sorting by color.
What is by color? No.....

Oh look! It didn't take very long and every group figured out that you sorted by shape!
In kindergarten, students have to be able to sort by color, shape and size.

Here is a great book by Maurice Sendak. It's called, Chicken Soup with Rice. We write the dates in our calendars every day. They are learning directionality (left to right) from this---it's interesting to see how messy our Sept calendars are compared to the rest of the year! We will also work more on proper formation of our numbers :)

Happy Tuesday!

Here is a team of 5 working on our morning sentence. Usually one child comes up to write the next word. Today, the tricky word was like. It is a snap word and you have to know them in a snap! What writers we are :)

In writing we got to start a movie starring the one and only ERIC CARLE!! He gave us some ideas today about how to write a story. The kids raised their hands when they heard something good!
*Wind up your thinking machine
*Use your imagination
*Ideas come from the inside and outside

Today was our first day doing math problem solving with our table teams. They didn't totally understand the concept at first...but as we went along, some tables started to say things like, "I have an idea!" We'll do more team activities soon!

The teams had to pick one attribute to sort the blocks by and then they drew their work.

We Miss You Cason!

We miss you! How's Disney World? Are you finding any hermit crabs????

Love,
K02

Monday, September 17th

Can you believe October is right around the corner? Wow! Time flies!
Here is Cale working on our morning sentence. See the little picture clue? Good readers use picture clues. Cale had a challenge today. Every sentence is usually I see _____. Today I changed the snap word to the word like. We talked about snap words and how we have to know them in a snap. They are listed on our shutterfly site too!

Practicing our math binders....they will soon be a part of math stations. They did great today!

Happy Friday!

A few great things to say about Friday! I was at a math training that day and K02 had their first sub. I was sooooo happy to come back and see such a nice note about how the sub said it was an excellent day and that she would love to come back!

Today we talked about being independent and making good choices....yes....even when Miss Dunker is not around. It's good for us! :)
We've been so intrigued by our little crab friends! We're just starting to do some research and learn facts about hermit crabs. Orlando pinched the carpet on Thursday and wouldn't let go. I was a little freaked out! He's my favorite crab :) He did finally let go though....but we had to look for him!

Here we are playing 'What's my attribute?' I laid out the attribute blocks on big work mats. THe kids had to figure out what attribute I had sorted by. Can you sort some things at your house? If you do, please send me a picture by email and we'll put it on the blog! Tell us what your attribute is :)
