Happy Monday Everyone!

We had a busy day full of learning yesterday! This time of year never ceases to amaze me. All of our kiddos are in such different places in their learning. I will try my very best to differentiate what I'm teaching through small groups, individual conferences and parent/teacher communication to help your child continue in his or her learning. Just to give you an idea....we have some kiddos who can't write their name, don't know the letters in their name and get numbers/letters mixed up! On the other end, we have kiddos writing SENTENCES and knowing different digraphs (like ch, sh and th). It's unbelievable...nothing new...this happens every year!
Well...here we go!

Here is a lovely picture of Ava, showing us her writing from yesterday. She has awesome labels on her story! She's definitely ready to try some sentences soon.

Here's Will working on 9-the number of the day. We're learning how mathematicians show numbers in fast, quick ways like with circle, tallies or 10 frames.

Happy FRIDAY!

Sorry I didn't get to post again until today! MEETINGS! Sheesh.
Okay....so I've noticed that our class needs a little work on the difference between a letter and a word. So now, when we write morning sentence, we either count the number of words, circle words, etc. Please practice this at home.

This morning sentence was on the first day of fall and it had THREE words.

This week we worked on sorting and describing objects. We played button match-up where we had to find someone with a button that had at least one matching attribute.

We have been learning about 5-frames and 10-frames too! Very fun! It helps us see numbers in new ways without just memorizing addition facts. For example, when I flashed this one, Audrina said she saw "2 on top and 2 on bottom." This is GREAT practice at breaking numbers apart. Teachers call it "structuring."

We also assigned some friends to be letter experts for other friends. Our goal is to know our letters and sound by Halloween!

You know, it's funny that a lot of my students (every year) think they're so advanced in math because they can count to 100! Well, if your kiddo thinks this....ask them this question...
What comes after 13?
What comes after 29?
What comes before 20?
And on and on and on. True number sense has a lot more to do with truly understanding numbers, quantities, order, etc. So counting to 100 is a start...but not the end goal.

Happy birthday to Carter (yesterday!) He is SUCH a sweetie :) I hope you had a GREAT night!

Today our new vocabulary words were leaves and autumn. It's really important for you to talk with your child a lot. Explain things. Describe things. Google how things work. Use big words. This will all aide your child in having good reading comprehension, because of having so much exposure to vocabulary.

Working on adding labels!
Remember moms and dads and grandmas and grandpas...do.not.spell.words.for.your.child.anymore!

Brayden used a 10 frame to show our number of the day! YAY!

Oops. Sideways. Tallies and 10 frames!

Happy birthday to Jace!!!! Tomorrow. We all love having you in K02!

Happy Tuesday!!!

We've been working for two days writing facts about hermit crabs! Some of us are already writing sentences....some of us are writing labels and a few of us drew great pictures that made sense.
This picture shows Morgan writing "they pinch."

Nayeli wrote "they need medicine in their water."

Kiera wrote, "They party at night." Haha! They do! They are nocturnal!

Carter wrote, "They have a tank."

Here a friend wrote that they have 10 legs!!!

They pinch! FYI....inventive spelling is totally age appropriate. Remember to NOT spell words for your child now! Have them say it slowly and quickly write down the sounds they think they hear :)

They have a shell.

We've also been talking about mathematicians and how it's very important to COUNT CAREFULLY!

Name mosaics!

Friday!!!!

Today we got our brand new vocabulary book. We sometimes refer to vocabulary words as learning words. It's really important for our kiddos to have a wide breadth of knowledge about various words. Good readers have good comprehension because they know a lot about the world. Today our word was nocturnal, because we've been learning about our new hermit crabs.

Oh....and as Charlie drew, bats are also nocturnal.

This morning, our writing friends practiced saying words sllloooooowly and quickly writing down the sounds they heard. We were writing labels for our shared writing we did yesterday.

turtle

dolphin

lobster

Yay for Emily's birthday! It was in August, so we celebrated today. We did awesome for our first birthday celebration!

Thank you for bringing us treats and a very special book to celebrate the day :) :)
