Happy birthday Isabel!

We've been studying hermit crabs in K02. We are learning the difference between text features in non-fiction/fiction books. Our job today was to write 3 facts about hermit crabs. So...you can't write I like crabs.....because it's not a fact :)

Look below...you'll see a big difference between the two facts. You can tell immediately that there is a difference in ability between these two children. The first picture shows finger spaces, knowledge of print concepts (letter vs word), letter/sound knowledge, etc. This writer can think of a sentence, write one word, go back and reread and then add the next word.

The second fact shows a typical sample. There are about 7 or 8 kids in K02 right now that don't fully grasp the concept of a letter vs. a word. You can help at home by pointing to things and asking your child, "Is that a word or a letter?" You can also ask, "Does that match," when he or she is trying to write a word.

In our class, we say this......say the word slowly and quickly write down what you hear.

Now you can kind of make out the first part of this sentence....it's "hermit crabs have purple pinchers." Many of our students are writing intial sounds only. This is very typical for the beginning of the year. Eventually, using say it slowly and write down every sound you hear, students will begin to hear more consonants and then vowels :)

I am going to really push the identification of a letter/word/sentence so that I can push spaces between words. This is obviously SO important so that we can read what they write.
