A fun and sunny day!

A good shot of us working independently during math problem solving. We do a ton of sharing and explaining our thinking...but the first step is learning how to get our work done by ourselves.

Today our problem was: Shake and dump 10 counters. Are there more yellow or red counters? Draw your counters. We showed some of the combinations with a plus sign. Your children are probably not ready to use the equal sign. I saw some amazing research a few Saturdays ago at South Dakota Counts. I saw that the majority of students up to SIXTH GRADE do not have a true understanding of equality. So I'll be sure to be doing a ton of equality lessons. The basic point is that students see the = sign meaning that they should compute something.

So when you give them a problem like 3 + 2 = ____ + 1....they will probably put a 5 in the blank! Interesting, right?!

Yay! Time for stuffed pumpkins!!!!
